Passionate North Yorkshire smallholders James and Lucy Haxton have opened their home as a luxury bed and breakfast. The couple took over Yorkshire Meats and the innovative Adopt-a-pig Scheme in May 2010 and are branching out in to the world of tourism and hospitality. Their new website www.habtonhouse.co.uk went live last week and James and Lucy are offering Malton Food Lovers Festival visitors a 25% discount on a stay at the B&B until end of May 2011. James and Lucy will also be exhibiting at the Festival with Yorkshire Meats and are looking forward to a busy weekend!

Established in 2000, Yorkshire Meats is a traditional meat company specialising in breeding and rearing rare-breed pedigree Oxford Sandy and Black pigs to be sold as a luxury product and is now most famous for its innovative adopt-a-pig scheme.

The idea of choosing a pig, naming it, visiting it and then eventually eating it has taken the market by storm, with customers from Brighton to Aberdeen. It is the ultimate journey in search of food provenance - a journey from field to fork, from pasture to plate. The adoption process starts when the piglets reach 8 weeks and lasts for around another 4 months.

Just 10 minutes from Malton and hidden away in the tiny hamlet of Little Habton, Malton, North Yorkshire, James and Lucy have been non-stop ever since moving to the area in November 2009. Habton House Farm is an attractive Grade II listed building and until the Haxtons moved in, it had stood empty for 6 years.

‘When we moved in the house felt damp and smelt fusty, and the garden was completely overgrown, we didn’t know where to start!’ says Lucy.

James adds ‘having done most of the renovations and transformed it to a beautiful country home, it’s hard to remember how it was’.

The Haxtons offer 3 en suite rooms, which have been individually designed to provide a mix of traditional elegance and modern comfort. The rooms all have flat screen digital televisions with Freeview, Ipod docking stations, hairdryer, Free WiFi and hospitality trays. The bathrooms have the luxury of underfloor heating, heated towel rails, large ‘rain’ shower heads, Taylor of London soaps and large fluffy towels.

James says ‘we really hope that the bed and breakfast will compliment Yorkshire Meats. Serving our guests our own recipe speciality sausages, our dry cured bacon, which matures for 4 weeks, and eggs from our neighbour’s free range chickens fills us with excitement. We strongly believe in food provenance and think it is important for people to see where their food comes from.’

Lucy adds ‘It’s a really fantastic time for us, as part of the adoption we invite customers to visit their pig and also ask that they collect their meat from the farm at the end of the adoption process. Through the adopt-a-pig scheme we hope to attract more people to come and visit Yorkshire’.
